THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
-The nervous system is a complex, complicated collection of nerves and neurons, a specialized cell that transmit signals between different parts of the body. In a way, it’s the body’s electrical wiring. There are three main functions to the nervous system: sensory, which is your sense of touch, hearing, or smell. Integration, the processing of the many sensory signals that are passed into the central nervous system. And finally, motor, where action is taken once sensory information has been evaluated. In terms of structure, this system has two components: the central nervous system, and the peripheral nervous system. While the central nervous system contains the brain, spinal cord and nerves, the peripheral nervous system is made up of sensory neurons, ganglia, a term that means a cluster of neurons, and lastly, nerves that connect to one another and to the central nervous system. |
